Repair a Ceramic Tile with Super Glue

When compared to other types of tiles used in a home, the popularity of ceramic tiles has quickly risen. Yet regardless of this, many people do not understand exactly what they are made of. Ceramic tiles are made up of essentially sand, natural products such as quartz, and of course, clay. Once all mixed together and shaped for its intended purpose, it is then fired up in a kiln.

Ceramic tiles can be painted and glazed. These kinds of tiles have a particularly long-life span compared to other tiles since they’re more resistant to tread and harsh weather conditions. They are also very simple to clean using just the basic of cleaning products. Even just cleaning the tiles with water can do the trick. Regardless of their advantages and durability, ceramic tiles tend to break from time to time. As a home owner, the chance of breaking one of your tiles is almost just a matter of when. In this case, you have many options for repairing ceramics.

One of the best solutions for ceramic tile repair, or ceramic repair in general, is quite simply super glue. Not all super glues are the same. Super glue that is derived from cyanoacrylate is by far the best. These specialty glues are considered to be instant adhesives, which means that the dry time is much quicker than usual by using the surrounding air. Unlike other glues, such as epoxies, super glues do not need to be mixed with any other products. Being a fast-drying product, it also makes it a durable product for resetting tasks such as fixing loose tiles.

super glue

For ceramic tile repair, use thick super glue. This super glue is perfect for any of your ceramic repairing needs. For outdoor applications that go through a great deal of weathering, try flexible CA glue for heavier duty repairs.

Before you start your repairs, understand that there are many different types of super glues out there on the market. Some glues are weather resistant that can be used for outdoor applications and others are more adaptable to water making them good for wet surfaces such as bathrooms. Therefore, regardless of which super glue you choose to repair your needs, always make sure to read the instructions on the package or label before you purchase. These instructions can tell you important information about the super glue from its thickness level, bonding time, to the areas you can apply it to.

Features You Should Look for in an Effective Super Glue Product

Thick Super Glue is efficient in being a multi-purpose instant adhesive. It is virtually able bond or repair any object available. This thick super glue has the following features.

  • Semi-flexible
  • Fills large gaps and holes
  • Dries clear in color
  • Resistant to moisture
  • Extended bonding time to provide longer positioning time
  • Compatible with wood, metal, rubber, leather, ceramics, stones, carbon fiber, fiberglass, PVC, and most plastics
  • For heavy duty bonding
  • Can be used for shoe repair and coral fragging

Understanding your Surface

Before you start to think of repairing, you should understand the type of surface you’re dealing with.

If the crack, chip, or scratch is on a vertical surface, such as a wall, a regular super glue might not be the best option because it could drip or run down the surface of the wall. This is where a thick super glue can come in handy because it will remain stationary even when it’s applied to a downward sloping surface. Depending on the working material, bonding time for the Starbond EM-2000 Thick, may exceed more than 2 minutes. For a quicker bonding time, accelerator is highly recommended.

Fixing a floor that has clear cracks or a couple of broken parts can easily be fixed by filling in the cracks or repairing the broken parts back together.

Repairing Your Ceramic Tiles Step by Step

1. Getting Started

One should take all precautions to make sure that they are safe when using any super glue product. Make sure to use rubber gloves, respirator mask, and do your repairs in a well-ventilated area. Cover the areas you do not want affected by the super glue in case of accidental spills.

2. Prepare and Clean the Surface

When using super glue, the surface, that the glue is being applied to, should be completely clean. For the super glue to reach its maximum bonding strength and work effectively, apply it to an absolutely clean surface, free of dust, oil, polish, or grease.

3. Collect All Ceramic Tile Pieces

In case you have just two or three broken pieces, collect and arrange them. If you have multiple smaller pieces, collect them and put them in a container for easy access while you work.

4. Arrange the Pieces Back to its Original Tile Form

Having your broken tile pieces scattered is not good for a successful repair. This process could be tedious, but just look at it like you’re assembling a puzzle together. The broken tile pieces need to be arranged as they were before the break in order for you to see what exact parts are going to be glued. This can be done by arranging them on the floor, table, or a flat surface.

5. Glue the Tile Back Together Again

Since super glue dries fast, make sure to apply the glue to the correct part of the tile that you intend to repair. This area should be the side where the tile broke. Use the nozzle of the glue bottle to apply a generous amount of the adhesive to the broken edges of the tile. Remember that the glue expands, so less is more. Start gluing the largest of the broken pieces first and work your way down to the smallest broken piece. This will make your repair easier to work with.

When all of the broken pieces of the tile are all laid out in the original form like how it was before the break, spread the pieces apart to where there is a small gap in between each of the breaks. Fill in the gaps of the with the glue and then press the pieces firmly together. If the gap overfills with excess glue, immediately remove the excess glue using a razor blade. Make sure to work on a newspaper or a piece of cardboard to protect the surface you’re working on. It is advisable to hold the glued pieces together until you are sure the glue is dry enough to hold by itself. Remember, bonding time for the thick super glue is about 2 minutes.

Leave the repaired tile out to dry for at least 2 hours. A full cure is about 24 hours to 2 days. It’s best to wait until the repaired tile has reached a full cure until you glue it back onto the floor or wall.

When repairing your ceramic tile, you should pay attention to the following:

  • The colors of the tile you intend to repair. Super Glue dries clear. Clear super glue on colored surfaces, looks unnoticeable because of their transparent nature.
  • In case your problem is larger chips and deeper crackers, clear super glue might not be the best of choices. Such instances, these types of cracks and chips would be better repaired using pigmented super glue that best matches the color of your broken tile.

In conclusion, there are many types of super glues that one can use in ceramic tile repair. These range from thick super glues to thin super glues. The choice is dependent on your repair and on the surface that it’s being applied to. For bonding and filling in gaps, thick super glues are best. For fixing minor blemishes such as small cracks and chips, thin supers glue reign supreme. As much as the quality of your super glue matters in ceramic tile repair, thick super glue will fit all your application needs.
