How Long Should You Wait Before Sanding While Working with CA Glue?

Quick answer: Wait until the CA glue is fully cured before sanding, not just surface-dry. With accelerator most CA glue cures almost instantly, but if you skip accelerator, or you filled a large or deep void, wait 10 to 15 minutes when short on time, ideally 30 minutes, before sanding. Sanding glue that is still curing underneath causes white spots, small holes, and a cloudy finish.

Most CA glues cure immediately when hit with accelerator or activator. But a few things lengthen the cure time: denser wood, a larger volume of glue in a bigger void, and over-applying accelerator (which can cure the surface too fast and trap uncured glue beneath).

Even when the surface looks hard, the glue underneath may still be “outgassing,” a chemical reaction that continues below the skin. That is why it pays to wait, especially on longer, wider, or deeper cracks.

Note: If you sand CA glue in an uncured state, you can get curing issues, small pinholes, and white spots in the finish. When in doubt, give it more time.

Sanding and buffing grits

When sanding, match the starting grit to how much excess CA is on the surface: start with a lower grit (150 to 600) for heavier buildup, or a medium grit (around 1500) for light excess. For buffing to a smooth, glossy CA finish, work up through 2000 to 5000 grit.

Frequently asked questions

How long should you wait before sanding CA glue?
With accelerator, you can usually sand within minutes. Without it, or on a large void, wait 10 to 30 minutes to be safe.

How long does super glue take to dry and fully cure in general?
It is touch-dry in under a minute and reaches full strength in about 24 hours. For the complete breakdown, see how long does super glue take to dry and cure.

Why did my CA glue turn white when sanded?
It was most likely sanded before fully curing, or accelerator was over-applied. Wait longer before sanding and use accelerator sparingly.

Can I speed up the cure so I can sand sooner?
Yes, a light mist of accelerator cures CA quickly, just avoid over-applying, which can trap uncured glue underneath.
