How to Bond EPDM using Starbond CA Glues?

1 min reading time

EPDM is a synthetic rubber that is extremely resistant to outdoor conditions: UV rays and water(moisture). Many customers ask us if they can use our CA glue to bond EPDM to PVC, glass, metal, and other materials. The answer is yes!

However, please note that rubber is one material that is notably difficult to bond. No matter what type of rubber you are working with, properly preparing it is the first step to a successful bond. Start by performing a thorough solvent degrease to remove things like slip additives, mold release, and other processing lubricants. A quick wipe with isopropanol is usually your best bet, as acetone may be too strong for certain types of rubber.

Again, bonding two rubber surfaces together can be challenging enough, but, when you need to bond rubber to another substrate, like PVC, the challenge can become even greater. We therefore recommend KEG-500 Starbond Flexible Heavy Medium CA Glue (Medium Thick), which is four times stronger than our standard CA glues, and is quite effective for bonding dissimilar substrates. As part of surface prep, we also advise to scuff the 'mating' surfaces so as to increase surface energy, giving the CA glue a better 'bite'.
